Set Up an OpenAI API Key for Practice

Practice uses your OpenAI API key for the AI features you choose. OpenAI bills API usage to your OpenAI account.

Create and store the key

1. Sign in to the OpenAI Platform.
2. Create or select the project used with Practice.
3. Open API Keys, create a project key, and choose the permissions needed by Practice.
4. Save the key in a password manager, system keychain, secret manager, or the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable.

Set billing controls

Open the project billing and usage settings. Add a payment method, choose a spending limit that matches your expected use, and enable usage alerts.

Connect and verify Practice

1. Open Practice settings and enter the project key.
2. Save the setting.
3. Run one guided reflection.
4. Confirm that Practice displays the result.

Replace a key

Create a new project key, update Practice and secret storage, verify one guided reflection, then revoke the earlier key in OpenAI Platform.
